ABOUT THE SHOW
The Adding Machine
Savannah Arts Academy Theatre presents The Adding Machine by Elmer Rice. This one-night-only performance features SAA Theatre’s One Act Competition Team before the company heads to competition. The Adding Machine is a production put on by the Savannah Arts Academy Theatre Department. The high school's theater team rehearsed and staged the performance as their competitive piece to defend their Georgia High School Association (GHSA) One-Act State Championship. The Concept: Elmer Rice's classic 1923 expressionistic play follows Mr. Zero, a department store accountant who is replaced by an adding machine. The SAA Theatre Department brought the script's themes of technology and routine to life with a creative set using cogs and gears. The Competition: The production was specifically mounted as the school's entry into the One-Act play festival circuit, which helps fund student travel and technical theatre training. Public Viewing: Like many of their competitive one-acts, the department opened the show for a very limited run (often just a single public performance) at the school campus on Washington Avenue before traveling to the regional and state levels.
